The building was designed by an architect named JØrn Utzon, and was formally opened in 1973.

Paragraf 2

Description (how it looks like)
Sydney Opera house is adopting a modern expressionist design, and this is particularly shown by its large concrete “shells”. If we look at them from distance, these shells appear uniformly white. There are two large spaces in the building, the first being the Concert Hall which is located in the Western part of the shells and the second is the Joan Sutherland Theater located in the Eastern part of the shells. There is smaller shell in the western side of the Monumental Steps, which houses the Bennelong Restaurant. The structure is surrounded by a large public space, and since it is located near Australian Harbor, we can sometimes see boats and ships passing by.

Paragraf 3

Description (what the building is used for)
The first person to perform at Sydney Opera House was Paul Robeson, who sang Ol’ Man River for the construction workers as they ate their lunch. In 1974, Joan Sutherland performed for the first time in the theater which is later named for her. Aside from being the center of performing arts, Sydney Opera House also becomes a tourist attraction. There are more than eight million people visiting the site annually, and almost half of them take a guided tour of the building. IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample (Package 5)

Topic
As computers are being used more and more in education, there will be soon no role for teachers in the classroom

Sample Answer

Technological advancement has significant impact on almost all human life aspects, especially education. Nowadays, there are more and more students who rely on computer when learning or doing school assignment. Some of them have even taken online learning to another level by completely leaving the traditional way of teaching and learning. This has raised a concern regarding the possibility of education being entirely taken over by technology.

Computer is an amazing tool which can be used to help the users accomplish certain task, ranging from the simplest task to the most complex one. Learning is no exception. The role of computer becomes more and more important as internet was invented, making it possible for the people to share and access information. Nowadays, there are so many online learning platform which can help students learn better through educational content, pdf books and podcast. In university level, it is common for the students to learn through distance learning. This has posed several challenges to educators, as they have to catch up with technology and update –and in some cases, upgrade their teaching method. Despite the fact that technology has become a common means of learning, I strongly agree that it will never replace the role of a teacher.

There are several reasons why technology can never replace a teacher. First of all, education is not just about transferring knowledge and skill to the pupils. There are so many cases where it involves giving motivation, realizing someone potentials, helping students with their self-regulation, and finding the best way of achieving someone’s future success. In terms of access to knowledge and information, technology seems to be undefeated. This is true since internet has created a web of knowledge which makes it possible for human to learn everything online. Secondly, computer will never be able to consider the students’ feeling and motivation, since the relationship between the two does not involve any emotional aspect. Teachers, on the other hand, never fail to give emotional support for the students. For example, when a student is having a personal problem with their family or peers, a teacher knows how to help the student deal with their problem, and not just telling them to finish certain task.

To conclude, there are several aspects involved in education. When it comes to the access of information and the transfer of knowledge, computer will be a great help in teaching and learning process. However, we have to remember that educating a person is not the same as installing a program to a computer. There are many aspects of education that technology can’t handle, and this is why it will never replace the role of a teacher.

For school children, their teachers have more influence on their intelligence and social development than their parents

To what extent do you agree or disagree

Sample answer

School is a place where children can gain knowledge and develop their interpersonal skill. It is generally believed that teachers have strong influence on children’s intelligence and social development. While I accept that pupils are acquiring most of their academic skills from the teachers, I would argue that children’s manner and social traits are mostly influenced by their parents.

When it comes to the pursuit of knowledge, motivation, and critical thinking, teachers are having a very significant role in children’s development. It often starts from day one at school, that the teachers help the younger members of society to find their passion and learn how to achieve it. There are so many examples of students that owe their lifelong love of a subject to dedicated teachers who used to teach them in high school. Besides teaching and motivating their pupils, a teacher would also be someone who listen with enthusiasm, as their pupils share some insight and explain their future aspirations. This is true since education itself is the art of combining professional skill in teaching and a more personal aspect like motivation, inspiration, and social awareness.

However, it is quite undeniable that parents would more likely be a role model for children. In fact, children’s behavior is often determined by the way parents raise them. As an illustration, we can think of children who suffer from neglectful parenting style. They often model their parents and thus, become socially deprived. In the case of children who grow up in an abusive family, they often end up being a troubled student at school. Home is where children should get a good moral framework. There is no point of excelling academically if their parents do not care much about their children’s feeling and self-esteem. It is hardly possible to expect children to perform well at school, if their parents never teach them how to respect and appreciate others.

In conclusion, children’s upbringing is significantly affected by their parents. The duty of an educator is to facilitate learning, helping the children to find what they are passionate about, and teaching them how achieve their goals in life. Parents, on the other hand, should be the ones who raise their children with moral education and affection.

Some people think that art is an essential subject for children at school while others think it is just a waste of time

Discuss both views and give your opinion

Sample Answer
The importance of art as a school subject has long been debated. There is a belief that art is less important compared to other subjects like physics or mathematics. I'm going to discuss both views before explaining my own standpoint.

To begin with, I would like to outline several reasons why some people think that learning art is a waste of time. These people generally believe that children need knowledge which will help them cope with global competition. Art is not a skill which is highly demanded in this era, compared to computer literacy, marketing or engineering. Parents are afraid that their children will not be able to find prospective career by depending on their artistic ability. Moreover, art is also considered less important compared to more-readily-used knowledge and skill like mathematics or foreign language mastery. Language skill, for instance, has been proven to have significant role in the era of globalization. Nowadays, foreign language proficiency is needed not only in interpersonal communication, but also in education setting and workplace. Art, on the other hand, is more isolated and matters only in museum or gallery.

However, this common belief is not entirely true. Learning art can indeed have some positive impact on our life. Playing a musical instrument, for example, involves a great deal of concentration. This may not be impressive for some people, but the ability to focus on what we do is one thing that we definitely need to successfully accomplish a task. Furthermore, there are many aspects life which involve artistry, although such involvement is sometimes not that straightforward. As an example, aesthetics is regarded as an essential component in web design or software engineering. As a result, the mastery of visual art will still be needed at some extent. Even in the era of technology where IT skill is paramount, art still becomes an integral part of human's life.

In summary, there will always be some benefits of learning art at school, even if it is not the most important subject of all. I personally think that people need to be encouraged to discover their passion and interest, be it art or any other subject.

Safety standards are important when building a house. Who should be responsible for reinforcing the safety standard of a house?

Sample Answer
As the world’s population continues to increase, there is more and more demand for housing. There are so many types of private dwelling, ranging from conventional house to vertical buildings. In all cases of building, safety standard is one of many aspects which needs to get a serious attention. In my personal opinion, home owners, government and constructor are responsible for ensuring that the house will not pose any potential danger to the dwellers. There are so many examples of potential danger resulted from the violation of safety standard in housing, This writing aims to outline three cases in which illustrate the significance of safety standard in residential homes.

First of all, the safety of a house should be the responsibility of each individual. Home owners should realize the potential threat like electrical shortage, fire, or accident. In the case of fire, for example, every house should have fire extinguisher and fire exit. Parents should make sure that the layout of the house is safe for the younger members of the family, especially if they have small children. There are several cases where toddlers are falling off the stairs because the parents are not aware that such accident could potentially happen and injure their children. In some fatal cases, there might be casualties in such incident, especially when a family lives in vertical building like apartment. For instance, there are several cases where toddlers are falling off a balcony. This usually happens when parents do not lock the door and do not realize that that the children play outside.

In terms of the safety, contractors and developers are responsible for complying with standard engineering requirement. Sadly, many of them often ignore safety in order to minimize cost, without knowing that what they do can jeopardize the people’s life. In this case, government carries at least half of the responsibility to monitor the compliance of a building developer. Moreover, government also needs to consider strengthening policy on housing in vulnerable areas, like fire-prone areas or earthquake-prone area. By taking some precautions and building more resilient housing, it is hoped that there no longer be loss of life.

From the explanation above, it can be inferred that the aspect of safety in housing should get more attention from all stakeholders. Individuals have to anticipate any danger by providing safety tool kits like fire extinguisher. As the ones who design and build the housing, contractors are responsible for meeting the safety standard. Government share the same responsibility and has to monitor the compliance of developer as well as strengthening policy on housing safety.

Some people believe that teenagers should be required to do unpaid community work in their free time. This can be beneficial for both the teenagers and the community

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this notion?

Sample Answer
Young generation plays an important role in the society, since their brilliant and innovative mind can always come up with better solutions for all problems we currently face. There are many ways of giving meaningful contribution to the community, and doing community work is just one of them.

It is traditionally believed that involvement in social work can benefit not only the society, but also the teenagers themselves. By doing social work, teenagers will better understand the importance of social integrity. They can also find out what they can do best in their future life. For example, when a teenager joins a teaching volunteer program, they will come to a realization that education is one of the most important aspects in life. By understanding the importance of education, teenagers may find interest in being a teacher or an educator. Sadly, education can sometimes be a commodity which is affordable only to the privileged few. Teenagers will understand the harsh fact that some people out there still cannot get an access to education due to financial condition, social prejudice, or even racial discrimination. This condition often raises an awareness among teenagers with high social intelligence. It may take some time for teenagers to find out the source of the problem. As they will begin to understand what they should do to alleviate the problems, their eager and brilliant mind will start formulating some solutions to change the society for the better. Problems related to education might be difficult to solve. But with the dedication and hard work of the eager young mind, this problem will eventually be tackled.

However, doing unpaid community work is not the only way to change the society for the better. It is inevitable that this kind social activity does not appeal to some younger members of society, and hence, should never be a mandatory activity. I personally believe that transformation can actually be done without forcing someone to do what they are not interested in. It is important to note that teenagers do not have to give up their passion or future aspirations to help others, and that social awareness should not be a result of a  coercion. In fact, teenagers can actually find what is best for them and others if they are given a proper guidance and chance to do what they love. For instance, teenagers who are good at programming or web design can develop a tool, such as app or online platform, to help the unfortunate children with their study. Nowadays, there are many startup companies which are run by young generation. These companies not only focus on getting profit, but also improving the life of others. The idea of online and distance learning has revolutionized our education and made it more easily accessible by everyone. In this case, teenagers can still generate decent income from online platform that they create and at the same time, making a significant impact on the society. The ability to create and innovate is one thing which differentiates the old and young generations. When the older generation cannot solve a problem using their traditional approach, the creative mind of the younger members of the society can always come up with an alternative solution.

It can be concluded that there are different ways of giving contribution to the community. Participating in an unpaid community work will definitely be a chance for the teenagers to give a significant impact on society. But, we also have to realize that it is not the only way to change the society for the better.

The History of Music
Music is everywhere, and it can be found in all cultures. Almost all people listen to music, whether it’s pop, rock, jazz or folk music. Even the most isolated tribal groups who live in remote areas have a form of music. The journey of music had begun even long before the ancient time. It is influenced and shaped by our culture and belief, as well as technology and social economic aspects.

Prehistoric music dated back to the prehistoric era. This kind of music was produced in preliterate culture and thus, left no historic clue for us to study. Native American and Aboriginal music might fit this category. The origin of this prehistoric music is still unknown, since its history was not recorded. The sound of this prehistoric music might be closely related to the sound and rhythm of nature. In some cases, music was played along with traditional games. Sometimes, it was used by hunters for luring animals (by mimicking their voice). In several occasions, music was even used in shamanistic practice. It’s not impossible that what was once called music was human’s voice itself, as they produce various types of voice ranging from singing, humming and whistling to clicking, coughing and yawning.

Prehistoric age ended with the development of writing. The oldest known song ever made by human was part of Hurian hymn number 6, first deciphered by Anne Draffkorn Kilmer. In Sassanid period, one of the oldest music was believed to be performed live. In ancient Greek, music was one of the most important parts of education, and was taught to children starting at age six. During the Biblical period, music was used to accompany a prayer called Hebrew litany.

The Baroque era took place from 1600 to 1750, and flourished mainly in Europe. It began when the first operas were written. In this era, multiple, simultaneous independent melody lines were used, in which a range of instruments (including strings, brass, woodwinds, and organ) was used for small ensembles. This period also witnessed several major music forms which will have significant influence on the next generation music. Some well-known composers from Baroque era include Johann Sebastian Bach, Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Music in Classical era tended to be voice-like and singable. This enabled composers to actually replace (as the focus of the music) and shift to instrumental music. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the central figure of Classical period. Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert were considered as the transitional composers which lead to the era of Romantic music.

Romantic period was characterized with a more expressive and emotional kind of music. Some famous composers from this era include Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Twentieth Century music was the time when music was revolutionized, as radio and other technology gained popularity worldwide. Music became more visual with the broadcast of music videos and live concerts. Music also became more portable as technology has made it possible for the people to listen to music from a portable device.
