WRITING TASK 1 GENERAL TRAINING

This was written by Hana

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to inform you that I want to take several days off duty and I need your permission for this (1).
I would like to take 14 days off duty on this Summer from 01 June until 14 June 2017 and it would be very long holiday (2). Because I must go to my village and it is very far away from here maybe it will be needed 2 days (3) to get there by car.
In addition, my little sister want to travel together with me at the end of her studies in High School. This is because of next week, she will celebrate of her graduation (4). Therefore, I will give presents for my sister with travelling together (5) in America for a week.
Over the course of my off duties, one week before I go (6), I will check several schedules about the pay bills of customers and I will bring my laptop. So, I could be covered my job then every day I will give you daily report by email (7). For these reasons, I hope that you will (8) give me for permission.

Yours faithfully, (9)

Jacob

Correction:
1. It is clear that you need the permission to take several days off work, since you already explained it in the first place. You can omit the phrase "for this"
2. I think that you should put this in the right order. Explain what's going on and explain the reason later so,
I want to go back to my home town, and it would be a very long holiday since I am planning to take 14 days off from 1 June until 14 June 2017.
3. This is a stringy sentence, either you need to separate it into two different sentences or you want to make it more well ordered. It's a double-verb sentence too and you also used passive voice there while you should use the active voice instead, so,
It is really important that I go back to my village even though it is very far away from here. It usually takes 2 days to get there by car.
4. I think the verb "celebrate" here is a transitive verb and thus it needs an Object right after it. You should omit the Preposition "of" so, she will celebrate her graduation.
5. Instead of using "with" you can use Conjunction "and", so
Therefore, I will give presents for my sister and take her to a one-week   trip to America
6. I think it's better if you put the phrase "one week before" at the end of the sentence so,
Over the course of my off duties, I will check several schedules...one week before I go
7. Another incorrect use of passive voice, you should use an active voice for this one, so
So, I can still cover all my jobs everyday and send the report to you by email.
8. I personally think that the word "will" is kind of too strong for a formal letter, especially when you are asking for permission. You may want to consider replacing it with other expression such as Let me know if the vacation request has been approved at your earliest convenience so I can finalize the accommodation process or Thank you for considering my request. This is a way more polite way to talk to a superior.
9. When you do know the name of the addressee, use Yours sincerely

Hence, it should be like this

Dear Mr. John,

I write this letter because I really need your permition as my Manager about something (1) I have worked in this company for 3 years. Company’s rules said that holiday could be taken for several days after she/he finished her/his contract agreement for 2 years and be fulltime worker (2)
I ask you to give me (3) 7 days off work. I know it’s very long days but I do it without no reason (4). I will go to Japan for a week because my sister sick (5) and I want to take her there because she need (6) to operate her cancer in Osaka hospital. I have to arrive there on July 30th so I will work off on July 28th because (7) I need to prepare anything. She is my only one sister and I can not dedicate it with another because my mother is too old for this responsibility and we do not have relative (8). So I need to cover it by myself. Do not worry about my work because I have asked Hana to cover my jobs while I am not in the office that (9) days. You can trust her because she is capable to handle my work for a while. (10)
I hope you can understand my situation and I wait your decision as soon as possible. Thank before (11)

Sincerely, (12)

Nita

1. No need to elaborate who and who, and this is not explained in the template. Just get down to business directly.
2. No need to elaborate the background, just state your intention directly. This is a letter so you may want to make it more concise.
3. It is too direct and you may want to make it less demanding
4. Instead of explaining that you do not do it for no reason, you better explain the reason why you do it in the first place
5. You need to add to be "is" as the verb
6. Subject-Verb agreement. Pronoun he, she, it and singular Noun are supposed to use inflection "s" at the end of its Simple Present Tense Verb
7. Did you mean: I want to take several days off work (?)
8. Try to avoid giving too personal expressions in a formal letter.
9. Those is used for plural Noun
10. You may want to take a little responsibility and instead stating "I will send my report via email and have Hanna print and deliver the paperwork to you."
11. I think it is more appropriate to say "Thank you for your consideration" and I think it is better to put gratitude before asking for their reply.
12. The greeting should be Yours sincerely (UK) or Sincerely yours (US)
Hence, it should be like this

Dear Mr. John,

PARTS OF SPEECH - KUNCI SUKSES IELTS, TOEFL, DAN SEGALA JENIS TES BAHASA INGGRIS

Parts of Speech

1. Content Words (Major word classes), dan
2. Function Words (Other word classes).

Content Words

a. Countable Noun (benda yang dapat dihitung)
Countable Noun mengacu kepada segala jenis benda yang dapat dihitung persatuan, misalnya: book, student, laptop, dsb. Countable Noun ini sendiri masih dapat dibagi lagi berdasarkan jumlah menjadi:

-Singular Noun yaitu benda yang berjumlah satu (dan biasanya wajib menggunakan article a/an dalam penyebutannya). Seperti a book, an article, dsb. Penyebutan singular countable Noun tanpa menggunakan article biasanya dianggap sebagai sebuah grammatical error (kesalahan gramatikal) sehingga:
Kita seharusnya menyebutkan I have a book dan bukan I have book.

-Plural Noun yaitu benda yang berjumlah lebih dari satu (dan biasanya ditandai dengan penambahan inflection "s" di belakangnya seperti: books, articles, dsb. Berbeda dengan singular countable Noun, plural countable Noun tidak harus (dan tidak boleh) disebutkan dengan article a/an, sehingga:
Kita tidak perlu menggunakan article a/an
I have books (sudah benar)
atau kita dapat menggunakan quantifier yang menjelaskan benda yang berjumlah banyak tersebut
I have many books / I have two books (sudah benar)

b. Uncountable Noun (benda yang tidak dapat dihitung)

Benda yang dimaksud disini adalah benda yang tidak dapat dihitung per satuan namun biasanya harus dihitung dengan menggunakan satuan pengukuran, misalnya water, air, sugar, dsb.
Mari kita ambil water sebagai contoh.
Kita tidak dapat mengatakan I have a water, karena uncountable Noun tidak dianggap benda yang berjumlah satu dan penyebutannya tidak bisa menggunakan article.
Namun kita bisa mengatakan I have much water atau I have two gallons of water dimana kata "much dan two gallons of" menjadi quantifier bagi Noun "water".

2. VERB

a. Adjective selalu bergandengan dengan Noun dan bersama membentuk sebuah frasa benda (Noun Phrase) dimana Noun menjadi "head" nya, sehingga:

b. Adjective tidak dapat berdiri sendiri tanpa Noun
c. Adjective dapat dibentuk dengan tiga cara yakni menggunakan:

-Kelas kata adjective seperti beautiful, smart, dsb.
-Present Participle/Gerund (Verb ing)
-Past Participle (Verb 3)

3a. Gerund sebagai Adjective
Gerund berfungsi sebagai modifier dimana ia merubah satu kelas kata menjadi kelas kata lain. Dalam kasus Gerund sebagai Adjective, biasanya ia merubah sebuah kata dari kelas Verb menjadi sebuah adjective, misalnya:
Kata frighten (V) yang artinya menakuti jika dalam bentuk Gerund menjadi frightening (Adj) yang artinya menakuti. Untuk lebih jelasnya, perhatikan contoh berikut ini:
-The man with pirate costume really frightens me, dimana kata "frightens" menjadi Verb yang berarti menakuti
bandingkan dengan
-She has a frightening story about spooky house, dimana "frightening" menjadi Adjective yang artinya menakutkan.

Catatan: Penggunaan gerund sebagai sebagai Verb (continuous) atau Adjective dibedakan oleh to be, dimana gerund verb menggunakan to be dan adjective tidak, misalnya:

The plane having a trouble with the machine is being repaired and is supposed to take off at 8.
Ada 2 gerund di kalimat tersebut yang berfungsi sebagai Verb dan Adjective, dan dibedakan oleh penggunaan to be.

Catatan: Penggunaa gerund sebagai adjective digunakan dalam kalimat berbentuk active voice. sedangkan V3 sebagai adjective digunakan dalam kalimat berbentuk passive voice.

3b. Past Participle sebagai Adjective
Adjective juga dapat dibentuk dari Past Participle jika kalimatnya dalam bentuk passive voice, seperti:
stolen book (a book which is/was stolen)
The state principle designed by the founding fathers is still used up to now (a principle which is designed by the founding fathers)

I work really hard (S+V+Adv+Adv)
I frantically run home (S+Adv+V)

Function Words

Namun kata ini belum menjadi kalimat, kecuali saya menggabungkannya dengan function words dalam bentuk article "a" dan conjunction "and", sehingga menjadi: I have a book and a pen

1. Pronoun
Pronoun (kata ganti) adalah kata ganti yang digunakan untuk menggantikan Noun yang sudah disebutkan sehingga sebuah benda tidak harus disebutkan berulang-ulang.
Misal:
I have an apple.
Jika tidak menggunakan Pronoun, saya harus mengulang kata apple pada kalimat
The apple is fresh
Namun jika saya menggunakan Pronoun untuk menggantikan apple, saya bisa mengucapkannya sebagai
It is fresh

Pronoun dibagi menjadi beberapa tipe , diantaranya:

Nominative/Subjective
Accusative/Objective
Possessive
Reflexive
I
Me
Mine
Myself
You
You
Yours
Yourself
They
Them
Theirs
Themselves
We
Us
Ours
Ourselves
He
Him
His
Himself
She
Her
Hers
Herself
It
It
Its
Itself

Catatan: Perbedaan Your dan Yours
Mungkin sobat bertanya-tanya lalu bagaimana dengan My, Your, Their, Our, His, Her, dan Its? Apakah ini bukan Possesive? Jawabannya adalah: Iya. But don't get it wrong. Possessive dapat dibagi menjadi beberapa jenis tergantung fungsinya dalam sebuah kalimat. Untuk contoh yang simpel, coba perhatikan kalimat berikut.
I have an apple.
Jika diurai per kata, maka seharusnya menjadi:
I (Noun) have (Verb) an (Determiner) apple (Noun)
Ada dua Noun, yang memiliki dua case berbeda (Nominative case dan Accusative Case) sehingga mereka juga menjalankan fungsi yang berbeda dalam kalimat sebagai sebuah Subject dan Sebuah Object.

Hal ini sama persis dengan kasus Possessive, dimana Your menjadi sebuah  Possessive Determiner untuk menjelaskan sebuah Noun (silahkan me-refer ulasan tentang Determiner dibawah) seperti pada kalimat
This is my book
dimana my menjadi Possessive Determiner yang menjelaskan kata "book". So,
My book=A book that belongs to me.
Sedangkan pada case yours, kata yours berfungsi layaknya sebuah Pronoun (yang mengacu ke Noun). Ini lah alasan mengapa anda tidak bisa mengatakan:
Yours book is good
Karena Pronoun dan Noun tidak dapat digabungkan, kecuali mereka dipisahkan oleh Preposition atau Conjunction, seperti pada kasus.
A friend of mine
Perhatikan bahwa Preposisi of berada diantara Noun dan Pronoun.
Untuk keterangan lebih jelas silahkan cek di:

2. Preposition
Preposition adalah kata yang biasanya terletak di depan Noun dan Pronoun menunjukkan hubungan antara Noun dan Pronoun dalam sebuah kalimat seperti at, in, of, for, about, before, dsb. Ada beberapa kombinasi yang mungkin dibuat dengan preposition, misalnya:
Prep+N
Prep+Adj+N/NP
Prep+Pronoun
Prep+Gerund

Preposition ini biasanya juga digunakan untuk:
Menunjukkan lokasi, seperti pada I am a student from the Radcliffe College.
Menunjukkan waktu berlangsungnya sesuatu seperti pada I am free on weekend
atau menunjukkan bagaimana sebuah hal dilakukan seperti pada I go to school by taking a bus

The Perks of Being a Preposition
Preposition ini terkadang membuat kita tidak habis pikir, karena beberapa hal seperti:
a. Dia tidak memiliki makna
atau lebih tepatnya, tidak memiliki satu makna yang pasti. Misal, Preposition by dapat diartikan sebagai
Dengan seperti pada I go to school by taking the bus
Disamping seperti pada Put the garbage by the postbox
sehingga kita harus memahami maksud sebuah kalimat secara keseluruhan untuk mengetahui apa yang dimaksud oleh sebuah Preposition.
b. Preposition digunakan pada Phrasal Verb yang maknanya sedikit idiomatic, dan oleh karenanya dapat berada di akhir kalimat (cukup membingungkan untuk non-native speakers, termasuk saya), misalnya:
I can help you with a lot of things, so if there's anything I can help you with, you let me know.

3. Conjunction
Conjunction adalah kata yang digunakan untuk menggabungkan frasa, klausa, atau kalimat. Ada dua jenis Conjunction yakni:
Coordinating Conjunction dan Subordinative

Coordinating Conjunction digunakan untuk menjelaskan hubungan yang setara (kedua bagian sama-sama penting) seperti
I have a book and a pencil (begitu juga dengan or, dan but)

Subordinative Conjunction digunakan untuk menjelaskan hubungan main dan subordinate clause seperti
I will just wait here until she gets home (begitu juga dengan because, for, since, dsb).

4. Determiner
Determiner adalah kata yang memperkenalkan sebuah Noun, dan dapat dibagi menjadi dua fungsi yakni:
Reference (fungsi menunjuk) seperti  this, that, these, those, there, dan here. Perhatikan bahwa penggunaan determiner ini bergantung pada jumlah sebuah benda. Misal:
Ketika benda berjumlah banyak, maka anda harus menggunakan these dan those, bukan this dan that.
Quantifier (fungsi menghitung) seperti many, much, few, a lot, several, some, a little, dsb. Perhatikan bahwa penggunaan quantifier ini bergantung apakah benda ybs termasuk countable Noun atau uncountable Noun, misal:
many, few, dan several digunakan untuk countable Noun
much dan a little digunakan untuk uncountable Noun
a lot dan some dapat digunakan baik untuk countable Noun maupun uncountable Noun, seperti pada:
I have some books, dimana book adalah countable Noun dan
I need some sugar, dimana sugar adalah uncountable Noun.

Lalu apa hubungan Parts of Speech dengan pengerjaan TOEFL, IELTS atau tes Bahasa Inggris lainnya? Kita akan membahas ini di tulisan selanjutnya, karena Post ini sudah sangat panjang dan menguras pikiran.
